Grandparent Blues

My grandmother lives in a trailer in Immokolee
My only living grandmother lives down in Immokolee
Well she's a non-migrant tomato picker
I guess she's got a healthy ticker
She still lives in that trailer in Immokolee

She must be hitting oh round 80 years now
She must be hitting round 'bout 80 years now
I haven't seen her since I was 10
Long ago and way back when
She must be hitting oh round 80 years now

Evelyn Dumas lived just down the road
She was my mother's mother and she lived just down the road
In a little house with jalousie windows
We'd watch All In The Family on a console television
Most afternoons when I got out of school

For 40 years she smoked 3 packs a day
For 40 odd years she smoked 3 packs a day
Well I was 17 when they found the cancer
They removed a lung and she died soon after
What a way to go, man, what a way

She was a ranking member of her local AA
She was a full-fledged member of her local AA
With her little poodle Rusty, her faithful pet
She helped dozens of people take them twelve steps
She's still held in high regard to this very day

I never knew neither of my grandpa's
I never ever met neither two of my grandpa's
One died early on of alcoholism
The other one left soon after shooting his jizm
And he ain't been seen since 1945

Well that's the story of all my grandparents
A melodic synopsis of all my grandparents
As you can tell I'm not to big on family trees
It's like there's all of them and then there's me
And pretty soon I'll be...
A grandparent
